Elsewhere within the Sierra lie a huge selection of lesser lakes, some higher than the timberline in areas of tumbled granite and sleek-walled canyons. West from the Sierra Nevada is Clear Lake; at 67 square miles (174 square km), it's the biggest normal lake wholly within the state. Around the jap flank from the Sierra are Mono Lake and Owens Lake
